Where did the standard ad sizes come from?
The early web saw a few common ad sizes, including the irregularly sized 468x60 banner, grow organically into a de-facto standard.
In , the IAB published a new standard for ad sizes, which included some of these popular sizes. The standard has been revised several times since then, and currently the 728x90 leaderboard and 300x250 medium rectangle make up over 50% of web ads between them.
Subtle hint about our next update.
We've now made the previously mentioned update.
Anyone who is missing their 1px border, or coloured background, will need to update their CSS accordingly. All adverts will now have a transparent background, giving you much greater styling choices.
To make transparency fully cross-browser compatible, you'll need to add the allowtransparency attribute to your ad unit iframe.
Next week we're removing the borders and background-color from our ad units. Publishers may need to change their HTML/CSS, hence the announcement this week.To preserve the appearance of your ad units, you'll need to apply background-colour and border styles to your iframe using CSS.The reason we're making this change, is to facilitate contemporary web design, and to prepare for a future update.
We have some interesting updates planned for the coming months.
These changes will benefit both publishers and advertisers, making our ads more flexible, easier to manage, and further our mission of serving the best ads for content possible.
Happy new year everyone.
